Theatre Classes
At Hickory Ridge High School, We offer a wide variety of Theatre based classes to expand students theatrical knowledge.
All students start in our Beginning Theatre Arts class. It is available for all HRHS Students, regardless of experience or pre-requisites.
We offer three Intermediate Theatre Courses: Intermediate Theatre Arts, Technical Theatre Arts, and Musical Theatre Arts. All students who have passed Beginning Theatre are eligible to take these classes as many times as they would like! These courses build on the skills gained from Beginning Theatre and apply them to a real world application.
After students take Beginning Theatre Arts and at least 1 Intermediate Theatre class, they may choose to either take another Intermediate Theatre Class or audition for the Advanced Theatre Class. This is an audition based class that is reserved for our more experiences creators. Here, they study advanced theory and apply it to more involved performances.

Beginning Theatre
This class will provide students with a well-rounded foundation in many theatrical concepts that can prepare anyone to be a knowledgeable theatre creator. Throughout the 10 units, students will be asked to participate in a variety of activities and exercises that will encourage them to go outside of their comfort zone and explore their creativity within an organized classroom setting.
The focus is to provide a safe space for everyone to feel welcome where they can explore the unknown in their individual, unique, and creative ways. By participating in class, students will be able to practice important skills like audience etiquette, public speaking, script analysis, collaboration, and so many more valuable skills to apply both on and off the stage.

Intermediate Theatre Classes
Intermediate Theatre Arts
This class is a direct continuation of the content learned in Beginning Theatre. Students will take a deeper dive into the theatre world, specifically focusing on Acting Techniques. They will start to take more ownership over projects and learn about the creative process through multiple avenues. Throughout the 7 units, students will take knowledge learned in beginning theatre and apply it to more performance types. They will cover:

This class is also often led by an Independent Study student who leads the students through a student-directed piece at the end of the semester.
Technical Theatre Arts
Technical theatre is for all students who are interested in exploring the behind-the-scenes aspects of theatre. In this class, students learn about every component outside of acting, from building sets to running a theatre company. They focus on both the design and planning of putting on a production, as well as getting hands on experience creating shows. They learn to design, build, sew, write, program, direct, and much more!
This class works along side other HRHS productions including the Fall TAlend Show, NCTC One Act Plays, and Musical auditions and desing meetings. This gives them real world, hands on experiences. Throughout the semester, students will cover:

Musical Theatre
For students who are wanting to dive into a more music focused course, they can take Musical Theatre. This class uses theatre knowledge to learn about musical components. Each lesson builds on students acting knowledge to learn more about singing and dancing. They cover skills like learning choreography for dance combos/full dances, reading music/music theory, and singing bother solo and group pieces.
The class culminates in a collaborative production of a one-act musical style production. Students are able to work as members of the production team, cast, or crew and contribute to a full production.

Honors Classes
Once students have proven their passions, dedication, and knowledge of theatre concepts by taking at least 2 theatre classes, they begin to gain honors credit for any theatre course they take.
As long as they continue to pass their previous theatre classes, any student can take all theatre 2 courses as many times as they would like. Each semester offers a unique hands on opportunuty to continue students education, and some courses even provide leadership opportunities for returning students.
If they would like to continue to challenge themself and get into more advanced topics, any student who is elligable for honors credit can audition for the Advanced Theatre Class. After taking 4 theatre courses (or proof of a vast knowledge of theatre topics through afterschool participation), students can even choose to be an Independent Study (IS) for one of our Classes.
Acomplished & Advanced
This class is the highest level of Theatre Arts courses offered at HRHS. This audition based class is reserved for a select group of students who excel in theatre content and want to learn more about the creation of theatre.
Students in these courses are expected to move at a quicker pace to keep up with the rigorous curriculum. They will take a deeper dive into the acting process and theory and begin to explore new theatre styles like Clowning, Stage Combat, and Neo-futurism.
This classes main focus is participating in NCTC (North Carolina Theatre Conference) One Act Play Competition. Students audition early in the semester to participate in a one act play that is taken to compete against different schools.

Any student who has completed all levels of theatre courses (or has prooven clear dedication to the craft) can inroll as an Independent Study for any of our Theatre 1-2 courses (Beginning Theatre, Intermediate Theatre, Musical Theatre, Technical Theatre).
These students will act as a leader and assistant to the teacher throughout the semester. They will be responsible for leading specific sections of lessons and each recieve an individualized goal to work towards for the end of the year.
